Course Description
The RYA one-day course covers the usual first aid subjects, these are from boating perspectives. Aimed at those who go on-water, on seas, navigable waters, inland, rivers, estuaries or cross channel passages.
Course Syllabus
Encountering a medical emergency with some first aid knowledge and immediate action could save lives, particularly in remote locations like boats. This one-day RYA course is designed to provide a working knowledge of first aid for people using small craft and to support boat skippers.
Course Content
It fulfils the requirements for:
first aid training for vessels working up to area Category 2 under the Maritime and Coastguard Agency Codes of Practice for Small Vessels Operated Commercially;
first aid training needed by offshore racers subject to World Sailing’s Offshore Special Regulation OSR 6.05.2;
the Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations, 1981 for the purposes of Emergency First Aid at Work.
The subjects specific to boating include:
the recovery position in a confined space
CPR, including the drowning protocol
cold shock and hypothermia from immersion and/or exposure
seasickness and dehydration
medical assistance or advice by VHF
helicopter rescue

Experience Requirements
No prior experience requirements necessary.
Course Times
8.45am-5.15pm with breaks and approximately 45 mins for lunch.
Duration: 1 day
All courses by arrangement.
Minimum Age Conditions
RYA says no minimum age for this course, however for us all students under the age of 18 must be accompanied by their attending paying parent or guardian (and with the parent/guardian’s written permission). Those under 18 are only accepted onto courses under these conditions – please call to discuss.
Student Instructor Ratios
The course will operates with a maximum of 10 students per instructor, when Covid-19 rules allow a re-commencement.

Prices on application – generally £100 per person including VAT.

What’s Not!
RYA First Aid at Sea Manual – can be purchased on booking.
You will need to provide your snack/lunch.
As rules permit there’s a cafe onsite (https://www.cobbsyachtclub.co.uk/about) and there’s local shops within a short walk/drive to purchase food.
We recommend (but not necessary for attendance or booking) RYA individual Membership, which costs £45 via direct debit or £52 via credit card/cheque. In the price list the fee has been shown at £52. You can join at our centre when attending or simply obtain more information.
