International Certificate of Competence (ICC)
Powerboat level 2 is one of the RYA’s most popular courses
RYA Powerboat Level 2 for recreational powerboaters is the most popular course that the RYA training centres like ourselves teach. A two-day entry level course providing the skills and background knowledge needed to become a competent powerboat driver by day in familiar waters. PB L2 is the basis of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC). It suits those new to boating who want to develop the base skills and those who have boated for a while but who want to reaffirm they are approaching their boating the right way.
Practically centred, aiming to maximize the time you spend afloat and minimize the classroom time. The course focuses on low-speed close quarters handling, person overboard recovery, an introduction to driving at planing speed, and collision avoidance regulations. Attendees learn how to safely helm and crew the boat as well as getting an introduction to marine navigation. During slow speed manoeuvres you’ll safely bring the boat alongside a pontoon and learn to turn the boat in a confined space before heading out into the harbour to conduct the planing speed manoeuvres of S turns, U turns and figure of eight, picking up a buoy and the crucial skill of MOB recovery. As we operate in one of the worlds largest tidal ranges we will also look to master the skills of stemming a tide.
During the course we focus on slow speed close quarters handling, enable a person (man) overboard recovery. Introduce you to driving at planing (high) speed, and collision avoidance regulations (“rules of the road”). We’ll teach and show how to safely helm and crew the boat as well as an introduction to marine pilotage navigation.
Slow speed movements will enable you to safely bring the boat alongside a pontoon and learn to turn the boat in a confined space. Then head out into the harbour to conduct picking up a buoy and the crucial skill of MOB recovery. And at planing speed manoeuvres of S turns, U turns and figure of eights. We operate in one of the worlds largest harbours with what is known locally as the “double stand tide” so plenty of water to master the skills of powerboat handling including stemming a tide.
Aiming to maximize the time you spend afloat and minimize the classroom time; intense but enjoyable learning.
